Tired of trying to get people to hold your quilt so you can photograph it?
Whether it is just the quilt top or a heavy finished patchwork quilt getting photographs of quilts is difficult. I have always asked family or friends to hold the quilt, sometimes I would hold the quilt so that it was held correctly because my kids are too small and then they take the photos. not an ideal situation! Don't even get me started on weather and wind, quilt holding is hard, so I made a quilt hanger, here is how:
Photo: string, eyelet screws, clips from ikea and a wooden dowel.
Things you need to make a quilt hanger:
- A piece of wooden dowel, I used a 1 inch pole but I think you could used thinner, depending on the weight and size of the quilt.
- eyelet screws as seen above.
- clips bought in Ikea, the are used for curtains but this is a useful alternative.
- string, fishing line maybe wire, something strong enough to hold the weight.
Firstly Marking: I marked the wood one inch from both ends (mark A), then I divide the distance in half, between the two mark As and made a make (mark B). Then I divided that distance between A and B in half and made a mark, mark C. I had 5 marks. these makes were on one side of the dowel in a line. I turned the dowel 180degrees of up side down and added 2 marks 6 inches from the end to attach the string.
Making the holes: I drilled a hole with an electric drill using a tiny bit, the hole should be less than the screw to attach securely, alternatively you could hammer a panel pin as a guild to help alignment.
Screw in all the eyelet screws, smaller eyelet screws for the bottom to connect to clips. Larger eyelet screws on the top to connect to thread and to take more weight.

Tread the string through both top eyelets and tie a knot.
Attach the clips to the quilt make sure it is attached to the quilt, not just the binging especially if it is hand bound, this could be weaker and so the quilt may be damaged.
Hang up your quilt and enjoy.

Photo: above is an Instagram poll I made on stories
I found the results really interesting, more than 65% saying to put the quilt on a wall and a tiny 8% saying it's only for the bed. Although I dont need to convince the majority here are some reasons to display a quilt on a wall.
