WHAT IS A QUILT? WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PATCHWORK AND QUILTING?

At the beginning I found this a little intimidating, maybe because it is so simple but I didn't really understand what exactly a quilt was.
A quilt is a blanket made of two or three layers, simple. However quilters do not like you to call them blankets, because each quilt take many hours, days, weeks and in the early stage months to make.
The three layers of a quilt are made up of the patchwork top, a middle and a back.
Most of the time there is a middle layer called batting, also know as wadding. When you have the backing, the batting and the top all together you have what you call a quilt sandwich. You can't eat it but there are 3 layers with all the messy ends hidden and a smooth outside, just like a sandwich, I suppose!
Then when you have your three layers together, you quilt it.
You sew or quilt all three layers together, you say 'you are quilting' and finally when finished quilting it, you have a quilt.
Side note when you sew the patchwork you say you are sewing. You sew pieces of fabric together but you quilt a quilt.
Hope this is helpful. Basically at the start it's hard I spent many hours feeding my little ones and watching videos to try understand. I didn't even own a quilt!

This quilt went to a man in Tralee I called it 'Geese flying west'. I found the pattern on youtube where Jenny from Missouri Star Company taught me so much quilty information.
