The Vienna Quilt pattern was designed and written by Sonja from Stoff Art Design. I was so delighted to test this pattern because it called out St.Brigid's cross to me. I made the wallhanging version but there are 4 other sizes available.
Wall Hanging/Pillow: 20" x 20"
Babysize: 40'' x 40''
Babysize WITH borders: 40'' x 51''
Throwsize: 60'' x 60''
Throwsize WITH borders: 60'' x 80''
The pattern is based on the Viennise Ferry Wheel which Sonja has been made into a modern quilt pattern. It is beginner friendly and it was really easy to make because of this I spent all my time on the quilting, I made a plan, auditioned treads and I am absolutely delighted with the finished wallhanging.
above: cutting exactly how the pattern dictates,
wishbone motif made using my hopping foot and free motion quilting,
marking straight lines before quilting using Hera marking tool and cutting ruler, I followed these lines without a ruler using my pressing foot.
I used Aurifil thread 2626, 6010 and 1147 were the colours I chose to use, once I had decided what motif was going where. These are 40wt thread and I love the finish, I didn't go for a dramatic contrast however the bright green on the grey gives enough differentiation to see the motif
The grey thread was used for the straight line stitching, the light brown for the wishbones and the bright green used for the leafy meander. I didn't quilt the green fabric so that it caused a nice amount of puff and enhance the unmistakable cross pattern
For the straight line stitching I used my cutting ruler and a Clover Hera marking tool using the centre point and the green strip piecing as a reference. I drew lines from corner to corner on the larger green stripes and used my pressing foot to create parallel lines in a diamond pattern following the lives I had marked, I did not use a quilting ruler for these.

bury all the treads can be dangerous if not paying attention, I stabbed myself with the needle, my daughter played nurse so i had to stay in this position until she got surgical wipes and a plaster,

The finished quilt I chose to bind it in the same grunge grey so that the cross took all the attention. This is a wallhanging, It is a gift for a very special person, I really hope its warmly recieved and used.
